USED LICHTLAERM AUDIO / Medusa [08]
Swedish Death Metal Distortion!
Lichtlaerm Audio is a German-based, high-gain handmade effects pedal brand for guitar and bass. By combining meticulous craftsmanship, the finest available electronic components, and an adventurous yet refined approach to circuit design itself, we strive to deliver devices with unique sound, flexibility, and durability that not only meet modern studio standards but can withstand touring on stages around the world.Finished with the brand's signature artwork style and color choices, each device is imbued with life and soul.
Medusa is the successor to Breathe//Die, Lichtlaerms' first product.
Born from a collaboration with the local Berlin band "Breathe//Die," it became the first HM2-style pedal to feature noise reduction circuitry, boost, and expansion capabilities in a compact enclosure. It sold out within days and subsequently rose to $600 on the secondary market.
As one of the most requested pedals for a revival, we decided not only to re-release it but also to redesign the circuitry to create the most flexible and cohesive package on the market.
By adopting the original design and moving the boost into the core circuit, we achieved up to three times the gain of the classic chainsaw pedal. You can also shape the low end using the acclaimed cut control and create punchy palm mutes impossible with the original.
Output has also increased significantly. That's... only natural.
With great power comes great responsibility. That means with all that gain and high-output volume, some noise is unavoidable. So we added a full version of Key&Gate to the circuit. It triggers from the input just like a modern noise gate and sits behind the loop, so anything blending with Medusa benefits from the gate.
Like the King in Yellow, we decided to add a parallel FX loop to Medusa.
This allows you to blend Medusa's powerful distortion with other devices (distortion, boost, overdrive, the preamp of your favorite tube amp, etc.). Or, you can leave the loop empty and use it as a clean blend. Of course, you can invert the loop's phase to avoid phase cancellation or create interesting out-of-phase sounds.
We kept the traditional HM2 EQ bands, Low and Grind, intact for easy access to that beloved, familiar grind sound. But we added a Parallel Mid control (200-700Hz) and a Shelving High filter, allowing you to boost or cut presence. Thanks to this presence control, Medusa also excels as a preamp.
