The Custom 24 is often called the epitome of PRS and has been at the heart of the brand ever since its debut at the 1985 Winter NAMM.
This Custom 24-08 features a maple top, mahogany back and neck, 24 frets, a 25-inch scale,a PRS-original Gen III tremolo unit, and Phase III tuners with newly designed wing buttons—all core Custom 24 specifications—while also incorporating TCI pickups and an EQ mini-toggle switch, enabling a rich variety of eight distinct sounds.
Furthermore, while the TCI pickups feature a humbucker design, they produce a sound that combines the richness and brilliance reminiscent of single-coil or soapbar pickups. When the EQ mini-toggle switch is set to the "on" position (top position), a high-pass filter engages, shelving the low frequencies to create a clearer, more musical tone in the high end.
In addition to PRS’s renowned playability and reliability, the Custom 24-08 offers a wide range of sound-shaping options—be sure to check it out.
Instrument Description
The switch from the traditional 85/15 pickups to TCI pickups delivers a sound with a distinct attack and a clear, musical tone with a solid core. It is also characterized by rich dynamics; it responds very well to the player’s touch and picking style, capturing subtle nuances in the sound and enabling expressive playing.
While the pickup’s shape might be categorized as a “mini humbucker,” the tone itself leans more toward a “P-90”-style character.
While the previous model already had a fully realized sound, I was surprised to see that it could still evolve further. Once you play it, you’ll likely understand exactly what the manufacturer means by its “musical sound.”
Condition
There is some fading of the finish, but it is in relatively good condition with minimal signs of use. The neck, frets, truss rod, and all other playability-related components are in perfect working order.
The back panel features an autograph in Paul Reed Smith’s own handwriting.
